Let's talk about the first and original novel by Frank Herbert. Who feels like kicking off the discussion of Paul Atreides, the Muad'Dib of Arrakis?

Excellent book, although it's been years since I've read the original. One of the top novels in SF ever, in my opinion!

Have not even begun to crack into the Dune Series, but plan on it very soon.

I'm relistening to the audiobook. Great production. I'm intrigued by the end of the first disc and all the set up. I don't want to spoil anything, but the first major event is almost a third of the way into the book, and yet I'm hanging on the story. He does a great job of presenting the "magic" of the gom jibar (sp?) and showing Paul's pain. "Heat, upon heat, upon heat." Simple and yet powerful.
There's a lot more to say about how he introduces us into the politics, the genetic manipulation of the sisterhood, twists and so on about Paul. All this deserves its own conversation, so I'll leave it here.
I'm trying to write the next Dune, emulating Herbert's craft and the experience he created for the reader.
